The Dark Side of PPI: How to Avoid Unscrupulous Firms

The BBC has reported today that a Swansea based PPI firm has had its licence suspended.

Falcon and Pointer made 40 million calls about PPI in just three months using automatic dialling technology.

The Claims Management Regulator (CMR) said that Falcon and Pointer had coerced people into signing contracts without giving them enough time to understand the terms and conditions.

The regulator described how Falcon and Pointer had committed a “serious breach” of the rules, causing them to be stripped of their licence and shut down.

It is these unprincipled companies that give PPI firms a bad reputation, but there are exceptions to the rule.

What to look out for:

• Don’t pay anything upfront
Reputable companies will never ask you to pay an upfront fee to investigate your claim.
If you feel like you are being forced to make a payment upfront, end the call.

• Don’t feel pressurised
If an advisor becomes aggressive or pushy, end the call. No reputable firm should make consumers feel this way. If you agree to have a claims pack sent out to you, you should never be pressured into sending it back. Take your time to read through, if it doesn’t feel right don’t sign it.

• Do ask questions
If the company is reputable, they will be more than happy to answer any questions you have no matter how big or small they are. Staff should be able to guide you through each step of the process and be clear about what they charge for their service if PPI is found in your name.

•Do follow recommendations
Have any of your family and friends claimed back PPI with a claims company? If they have, would they recommend the service they received? If someone you know has had a great experience it indicates the company is reliable and genuinely cares about their clients.

Remember: If you are pushed, pressurised or asked for payments, end the call.
